Lives and works in Mallorca. Trained at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis in Palma, Mallorca, and at La Llotja in Barcelona. His early interest in art was shaped by the environment he grew up in, a family of craftsmen and artists. His career began in the 1980s with various exhibitions, although it was not until the late 1990s that he established himself as a sculptor.

Joan Cortés has a very personal language marked by sobriety and the predominance of essential, organic forms, achieving a refined treatment of volume in his works. Using industrial materials such as plastic, wood, steel, polyurethane, rubber and plaster, coated with lacquer or paint or left bare, he makes his works feel almost ethereal. White is present in many of them and becomes a symbol showing that nothing in his work is superfluous.

His solo exhibitions include Galeria Maior, Pollença-Palma (from 1995 onwards), Galería Van der Voort, Ibiza (2003, 2006), Horno de la Ciudadela, Pamplona (2006), Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma (2009) and Galería Ana Vilaseco, A Coruña (2011). He has taken part in group exhibitions at Casal Solleric, Palma (2003) and Nit Niu, Cala Sant Vicenç, Pollença, Mallorca (2003), and in several editions of international fairs such as ARCO Madrid and Art Cologne. His work is held in public and private collections such as those of the Ajuntament de Palma, the Patio Herreriano Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art in Valladolid, the Balearic Government, the Coca-Cola Foundation Collection and the Fundació “Sa Nostra” in Palma, among others.
