Riccardo Matlakas is known for his versatility across different art forms, including performance, dance, painting and sculpture.
He graduated in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples and holds a master’s degree in Social Sculpture from Oxford Brookes University.
Riccardo sees the context he works in as the main inspiration for his work, finding common ground with each culture he connects with. He creates cathartic actions and performances at the forefront of today’s political, environmental and spiritual concerns, digging for the essence of humanity beyond race and custom. He often collects relics from his performances, which then become objects of memory and contemplation.
Matlakas’s artistic expression is mainly inspired by spiritual growth, human development in society and the movement of the body connected to the breath.

Among his many residencies and exhibitions abroad, Riccardo Matlakas has performed and shown his work at the Moscow Biennale for Young Art in 2010, the Gwangju Biennale in 2014 and the Prague Quadrennial, and his work is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Odessa, Ukraine, the Palestine Museum in Cape Town and the Haegeumgang Museum in South Korea.
